    David in Anaheim !

Hello all!   Well, we descended upon the Grove of Anaheim yesterday..  I can say I am NOT a DG virgin any longer if that makes sense.  I was so excited for this.  Pamela and I kept missing each other by phone calls and texts, so I went to the venue at about 7:30.  Proceeded to will call, received my ticket and made it in.   I went down to see where I would be sitting for the evening. WOW so close.  Small venue, about 1400 seating.

I was on the aisle right next to the stairs I knew he would be coming down.  I went back up to get a drink... (pepsi) lol.  And went to come back down, and my ticket was GONE.  Imagine not being able to find your ticket on the first night of many beautiful nights.  I wasn't panicked... yet... lol

I sat down on the floor (imagine that sight!) dumped out my Mary Poppins carpet bag  (just kidding) and it was NO WHERE to be found. A little light bulb went on, so I went back to the usher who seated me, and he remembered me and exactly where I was sitting.  I told him I lost my ticket, and he said "no problem I remember you!  Go ahead and go sit down .  Let me know if there are any problems"     I sat down and waited and listened and waited and watched everything and everyone around.   Young and old, everyone seemed so excited.    5 mins til showtime.   The band came out and then, heard the beginning of Gypsy Dance... I turned and looked behind me.. and nothing.  All of a sudden there he was coming down the center aisle stairs.  He was so close to me I could have reached out and tickled him ... lol   What beautiful music.   I was completely mesmorized by his hands and fingers playing this beautiful intstrument., and how it looked so simple and carefree to him.  I could not speak, clap, stand up or anything.  I was in the moment!   Paganini, Bernstein, Jackson, Zeppelin, ACDC, Humoresque, simply amazing.  He spoke about how he was just diagnosed with an inner ear infection..  David,  GET SOME REST!         He looked good, but I will say a little road weary. He spoke about his loft in NY and some of his little street smarts came out with a four letter word... Starts with an F... lol  I laughed so hard when he caught himself and tried to cover up what he just said.  lol     Beautiful night!  Absolutely loved it.

At intermission it was phone tag again with Pamela.  Here we are inside the theatre telling each other where we were.  It must have been a spectacle to some people in there.  Pamela going down aisles, not being able to get to where I was, losing me, finding me etc..  It was so funny.  But we finally met and hugged and had an instant liking to each other. Pamela!!! You are loved!!!    At the end when we walked out, all that was left of merchandise was the Iheart David Tshirt and the mens David Garrett T shirt, and that was it!  I didn't get anything, because I am waiting for the show in San Diego with Pamela. I'll probably have to get something before the show, because there will probably be nothing left afterward!  We really couldn't take any pictures, which I suspected would be the case.  I have pictures of me there, but I'm sure you would like to see him instead. lol

But I recorded the encores on my phone. I'll try to get them up, I have some of his musings and some music on there.  They are pretty audlble, but I can probably clean them up a bit and will post for you all.  Hopefully Pamela and I will have more success in SD as far as that goes.  So tomorrow I meet at Pamela's house we will drive down to SD together, stay at the Hilton 3 or 4 blocks away. And have our night replayed.

I'm sure Pamela will be posting her views on the evening too.

    Everyone take care!  peace,  Lisa

    And here the article!!

Violinist David Garrett crosses over in Anaheim

February 27th, 2010, 11:57 am · Post a Comment · posted by TIMOTHY MANGAN, THE ORANGE COUNTY

David Garrett, the young crossover violinist seen on PBS and elsewhere around TV-land these days, gives classical music a beat. Not that it doesn’t already have one, but Garrett makes it explicit, performing with a rock band. His show Friday night at the Grove Theater in Anaheim brought together the music of Metallica and AC/DC and Rimsky-Korsakov and Bach, no small feat in itself.

Virtuosity is part of the package. Garrett can fiddle. A student of Itzhak Perlman and Ida Haendel, and a graduate of Juilliard, the 28-year-old musician from Aachen, Germany, plays fast, plays clean, plays in tune. In terms of technique, at least in the short pieces he played Friday, he can do it.

His band is made up of electric keyboard, guitar, bass and drum set. With the band already onstage, Garrett made his entrance walking down the aisle, in a spotlight, playing a fantasy based on tunes from Bizet’s “Carmen.” He wore his blond locks in a ponytail and was dressed in a black coat, printed t-shirt, shiny pants and boots that were loose at the top. His whiskers were several days old. A former model, his looks are part of his appeal, too, if screaming women are any indication.

The atmosphere was more casual than a classical event. People brought drinks to their seats and wooed and hollered and told Garrett that they loved him. Colored lights flashed onstage throughout the show and were sometimes aimed at the audience. You know the scene – a pop concert.

Garrett performed on a regular acoustic violin which was hooked up to a microphone. The sound was fine most of the time, if loud and steely, but in some of the softer melodic playing it could sound tinny. He spoke between numbers with a slight accent, introducing each piece, making small talk, telling anecdotes and smiling a lot. He comes off not as the dangerous rock star type, but approachable and sincere.

Queen’s “Who Wants to Be Forever” came next. Many of the rock and pop numbers, including Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck,” and Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir,” came off well. The violin has always been good at imitating a singing human voice and, when electrified, it can drive rock riffs as well as any instrument. Garrett’s band was in its element in these pieces.

It was a versatile band, comfortable in anything that Garrett threw its way, but in some of the music it was reduced to little more than a wedding band. I am thinking of such pieces as Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5, Dinicu’s “Hora Staccato” (an old Heifetz favorite) and Monti’s Csárdás, where the supporting players sounded like a polka group (not that there’s anything wrong with polka). But then the focus was clearly on Garrett during these bonbons.

Some of the classical arrangements were better, though, such as the hard-driving take on Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” and an almost punk rendition of “The Flight of the Bumblebee.” Vivaldi-like “sewing-machine” patterns on the violin juiced many an arrangement, in fact, both pop and classical.

Garrett cast his net wide, performing “Volare” (rumba-style), Bach’s “Air” (from the Orchestral Suite No. 3), Gershwin’s “Summertime,” Bernstein’s “Somewhere,” “Dueling Banjos,” and Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.” The amplification sapped some of the sweetness out of Dvorák’s delicate “Humoresque.” Paganini’s Variations on “Carnival in Venice” engendered a big roar from the crowd for Garrett’s clear mastery of its technical demands.

He plays with a good deal of portamento, and bows aggressively, but neither unduly. He wants to entertain and please, and his fans seemed both on Friday.

Great review! So lively and fun. And so typical for a David concert, that you are on cloud No. 9 and something around it went wrong. LOL. Almost everyone here has a story like that to tell. Btw. Did you find the missing ticket afterwards?

The news about the inner ear infection is no good at all, cause he'll have to fly over here in just a few days, and that is not healthy to do with such an infection. *worried about that*

Anyway, welcome to the club of DG-virus infected, lol, who can't get enough of his concerts.

I wish you and Pamela a lot of fun at your second one in San Diego tomorrow. You'll be able to enjoy it even more, not being as over excited as yesterday.

WOW - what a review.  You and Pamela will sure have a good time in SD.  Couldn't believe that about the ear infection b/c my daughter has the same thing at this very moment and will be flying for vacation in a few days.  Lots of meds.  It was that bad!  So I'm hoping DG is on top of his health and getting the care he needs. This is the mother in me...lol............HAVE FUN. BTW -  Great pics
